A pioneering U.K. punk album with plenty of panache, the lighting-jolted Damned Damned Damned plays a great deal faster than the music of their contemporaries in the Sex Pistols or the Clash. “Stab Your Back” and “New Rose” — the country’s first punk single — set the bar high with their frenzied paces, drummer Rat Scabies rampaging his kit like Keith Moon on a speed-bender. Then again, the blood-chilling creep of mid-album highlight “Feel the Pain” — crooned by kinda corpse-painted frontman Dave Vanian — is a heart-panging proto-goth classic. Influential on many levels, it’s a damned classic album. Essential listening for any punk devotee.
