In 2007, melodeath’s influence could be heard in every metalcore band going, but The Black Dahlia Murder were one of few bands actually honoring the source material. Trevor Strnad and Co. truly came to life on the viciously fun Nocturnal, a smorgasbord of sword-swinging riffs, vampiric screeches and Strnad’s playfully violent poeticisms. “Deathmask Divine,” “What A Horrible Night to Have a Curse” and “Everything Went Black” are some of the band’s greatest songs, and the whole album is a riot.
