Boston’s SS Decontrol (or SSD) weren’t the first hardcore band to scream about straight edge, but bandleader/guitarist Al Barile was the one to made it a lifestyle. 1981 debut album The Kids Will Have Their Say is seething with teenage fury, the group doling out the damage through pummeling, speed-forward songs that call out drug-induced apathy, police brutality and toxic nationalism. Powered by Barile’s body-slamming guitar brutalism and vocalist Springa’s feral roar, Kids is hallowed but unhinged first-wave hardcore at its finest. Finally back in print, and remastered without losing an ounce of its rawness.
