SS Decontrol (a.k.a. SSD) weren’t technically the first hardcore band to sing about straight edge, but they were the first to wear their drug-free stance as a violent badge of honor. 1983’s Get It Away EP is full of proudly antagonistic, subversively clear-headed and positively raging anthems about snapping cigarettes and smacking beers out of people’s hands. Considering how the Boston Crew also divebombed the pit with a series of furiously bruising riffs and full-speed-ahead punk beats, those weren’t empty threats, either. A staggeringly raw snapshot of the developing Eighties hardcore scene, remastered at 45 rpm and uglier than ever.
