Outside of briefly punky bursts like “Ty Cobb,” 1996’s Down on the Upside tended to present Soundgarden in a more pensive mood than fans had been accustomed to. The amps were still cranked, but the Seattle band’s fifth album preferred to hone perversely paisley-printed psychedelia (“Pretty Noose”) and oddly Delta blues-adjacent alt-rock struts (“Burden in My Hand”) than fully revisit the sound of the chart-topping Superunknown. The only real downside was that Soundgarden broke up less than a year after the record’s release — they’d eventually reunite and follow it up with 2012’s King Animal.
