Released in 1992, Dirty was the double-sized second album Sonic Youth made for major label DGC. Songs like “100%” and “Sugar Kane” mixed compact hooks with left-of-center guitar experimenting, while the band filled the rest of the album with noise-spiraling experimental jams, collaborations with Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye, a fiendish and frenzied cover of D.C. hardcore band the Untouchables, and songs addressing workplace harassment (“Swimsuit Issue”) and racism (“Youth Against Fascism”). Produced by Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins), Dirty remains one of the most massive-sounding albums ever delivered to the Alternative Nation.
