California stoner-metal trio Sleep were inspired by Sabbath and the copious amounts of sweet leaf they’d been smoking, which is why 1992’s Holy Mountain billows up cannabinoid-hearty gloom riffs and high-timed lyricism aplenty. Songs like “Dragonaut” and “Some Grass” sparked a ton of interest, and Sleep’s“new stoner sun” began rising high. The amp-rattling, perma-baked goodness of Holy Mountain — packed with stellar playing from lead guitarist and future High on Fire founder Matt Pike — is still super potent more than 30 years later.
