After coming up as key figures in New York’s late Eighties hardcore scene, former Youth of Today members Ray Cappo and guitarist John “Porcell” Porcelly expanded their artistic and spiritual horizons with their Hare Krishna-focused Shelter. 1995’s Mantra still laid down intense and speedy Youth Crew tunes, but the band also spread the message of the Bhagavat while bounding through rap-rock rhythms and spirited pop-punk arrangements. A consciousness-expanding hardcore classic, repressed for its 30th anniversary on “Red and Clear Ghostly” vinyl, redelivered with its original cover art and sporting a new gatefold layout.
