A post-hardcore supergroup with an enormously impressive pedigree, Rival Schools found Quicksand vocalist-guitarist Walter Schreifels melding anthem alt-rock melodies and swerve-heavy grooves with members of Youth of Today and Iceburn. The lesson plan of 2001’s United by Fate illustrates that they could transform the drive and energy of their shared hardcore heritage with soaring hooks, drum loops and almost surf-adjacent guitar play. Though songs like “High Acetate” and “Good Things” didn’t quite conquer arenas, they should’ve. The band’s cult classic debut LP has been repressed on vibrant “green glitter” vinyl.
