While born out of great tragedy, there’s an undeniable joie de vivre coursing through the Chili’s fourth album. It was the band’s first release since the overdose death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, but the punk-funkers found a new creative foil in then teenaged six-string John Frusciante, who delivered a distinct fluidity and sense of style to the band’s groovy bedrock. The platinum selling album includes a funked-and-thrashed cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” slap-happy metal crunches and the ever-anthemic “Knock Me Down.”
