While Primus’ 1989 live album, Suck on This, was technically their first release, 1990’s Frizzle Fry is their first studio-recorded masterpiece — and the most accurate representation of the band’s singular identity. Les Claypool’s funky, ramshackle basslines, uncharacteristically silly vocals and oddball lyrics synthesized into a quasi-metal sound like no one else’s, and this record is packed with highlights ranging from “Too Many Puppies” and “John the Fisherman” to the wacky drug addict character study, “Harold of the Rocks.” Get yer Frizzle Fry on wax.
