Rising from the ashes of Jane’s Addiction’s early Nineties flame-out, vocalist Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins eventually got back to business and teamed with new collaborators Peter DiStefano (guitar) and Martyn LeNoble (bass) as Porno for Pyros. Their platinum-selling debut retains certain touchstones — heavily hypnotic and funky alt-rock, plus Farrell’s enigmatic tenor. Yet “Cursed Female” strikes off towards a sinister new grooviness, while the windchime-filled “Pets” may be the prettiest song ever written about being taken over by an alien race. The Pornos’ debut is possessed with a fiery artistic spirt, Farrell confirming this with the record’s opening line: “I got the devil in me.”
