Following the acid-tab psychedelia of Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett era and the orchestral bombast of 1970’s Atom Heart Mother, 1971’s Meddle found the English rockers continuing to expand their musical horizons through a series of diverging experiments. This includes dub-like bass drones (“One of These Days”), smooth-jazz noodlings (“San Tropez”) and music concrète field recordings of U.K. football fans and howling hounds. It closes with the pineal gland-piercing gloom-prog mastery of its nearly 24-minute title track. Not quite understated, though perhaps underrated against some of Pink Floyd’s biggest-selling albums, Meddle is a mind-bender from one of rock’s most legendary acts.
