How do you top a multi-million breakthrough like Pearl Jam’s impactful debut outing, Ten? Whether they liked it or not, the Seattle unit were firmly in the limelight as one of grunge-rock’s great hopes in the early Nineties. While they could have coasted by with another toweringly anthemic outing, Eddie Vedder and co. opted to get slightly weirder with their follow-up. Vs. is still home to huge guitar songs (“Animal”), but it’s not afraid to get tender and folky (“Daughter”), or mix politics with a Southern-funk hybridity (“Glorified G”). Vs. set a record for most albums sold in its first week of release, and remains a touchstone to Pearl Jam’s continued eclecticism.
