Nirvana’s Unplugged album manages to be both aesthetically soft and contextually heavy. The acoustic-style set was recorded for MTV a couple months after the release of their noise-spiraling In Utero, and found the band showcasing deep cuts and covers of David Bowie and Meat Puppets, rather than the game-changing hits that propelled grunge mania. It’s a sublime performance where symphonic cello swells complement the raw and raspy cries of Kurt Cobain. Though the volume came down significantly, you couldn’t deny Nirvana’s songwriting power. Sadly, it’s the first Nirvana project to have been released posthumously, following Cobain’s death.
