Trent Reznor leveled up the intensity of his industrial project with his massive-sounding, yet comparatively bite-sized follow-up to 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine. By the early Nineties, his distorted guitar sounds were getting even more furious and fuzzy. A sneering punk menace sears through eternal barn-burner “Wish.” And songs like “Suck” reveled in an eternal grime we’ll gladly never be rid of. Thought currently delivered on separate slabs of 12 and 7-inch vinyl, few EPs are as wholly realized and raging as Broken.
