1985’s Theatre of Pain toned down the Satanic imagery of Mötley Crüe’s breakthrough era, yet the hard-rock foursome are still louder than hell on the follow-up to Shout at the Devil. They filled their Theatre with double-kick speed-metal (“Use It or Lose It”) and Sunset Strip swagger (“City Boy Blues”), while a cover of Brownsville Station’s “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” further leaned into Mötley’s smirking reputation. Still, Vince Neil pulls back the curtain with an earnest performance on their piano-heavy “Home Sweet Home,” one of the greatest power ballads of the Eighties. The 40th anniversary pressing of Pain has been remastered, and features updated artwork.
