Armed with the phaser-blasted psych-sludge hit “Negasonic Teenage Warhead,” Monster Magnet’s Dopes to Infinity elevated guitarist-vocalist Dave Wyndorf and the rest of his New Jersey outfit into a new level of rock and roll infamy. The band’s third album launched space-gazing lyrics and joint-blazing proto-metal hooks into the stratosphere, yet it laid the groundwork for their gold-selling follow-up, 1997’s Powertrip. Uniquely, Wendorf penned “Ego, the Living Planet” as a tribute to the cosmic Marvel comics character of the same name; a few years later, X-Men scribe Grant Morrison would honor Monster Magnet by naming a new mutant Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
