Ministry’s most famous album may well be the band’s darkest masterpiece. Bandleader Al Jourgensen was spiraling even deeper into drug addiction during the making of their fifth full-length release, with that real-life horror spitting into furiously thrashing highlight “Just One Fix.” Sonically, it was also a minefield of black-metal adjacent blasting (“TV II”), terror-swung metal (“Psalm 69”) and geo-political industrial menace (“N.W.O.”). It oddly also has Butthole Surfers vocalist Gibby Haynes wang-danging away on the uproarious mock-rockabilly burner “Jesus Built My Hotrod,” a rare moment of levity on this incredible, but supremely unsettling Ministry classic.
