Metallica definitely played against character with 1996’s Load. Following the globe-conquering phenomenon that was the ‘Black Album,’ the biggest metal band in the world decided to go against the grain with their sixth full-length. They cut their hair. Their music videos went ultra-arty. Most traces of thrash were excised in favor of bottle-slide surging bluesiness, crater-creating rock stomps and full-blown country. It was a shock to the system, yet 30 years on, Load reflects ‘Tallica’s commendable quest to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
