Mercyful Fate’s 1983 debut album was an inverted star-making turn that instantly established Hank Shermann and Michael Denner as guitar heroes (Metallica later incorporated four of its songs into a Garage, Inc. medley), while King Diamond’s evil tales of graveyard desecrations made the face-painted, falsetto-voiced frontman one of the genre’s true icons.
