Megadeth’s momentum was chugging along with a full head of steam in the mid-Nineties. Sixth album Youthanasia is the follow-up to the legendary metal band’s career zenith, 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, and it continues the group’s trend towards arena-filling rock riffs. Fist-raising outings like “Train of Consequences” streamlined their sound, taming the thrashiest and proggiest tendencies of their aesthetic in favor of masses-conquering hooks. While the tempo slowed a touch, they reinforced their metal edge with dynamic solos and Mustaine’s familiar seething rasp. Arguably one of Megadeth’s more underrated outings, Youthanasia still sounds pretty killer.
