Mastodon have never remained stagnant, and they’ve made that abundantly clear since the first few notes of “Crusher Destroyer.” The Atlanta juggernaut’s 2002 debut full-length — still their heaviest dispatch — is stuffed with frenzied rhythms, prickly leads, chugging riffs and bellowing vocals that congealed into a sound unlike anything else of their era — or any era since. Remission is worth owning on vinyl for the brilliant cover art alone, but these beastly discharges also sound best on wax.
