A great ache informs much of 2017’s Emperor of Sand, a concept album inspired by the cancer battles many of Mastodon’s family members had been facing during its making. Drummer Brann Dailor even described the titular Emperor as a bit of a Grim Reaper-type figure, and as an embodiment of the disease. Yet the group’s stunning seventh album faces adversity undeterred, and with an unabashed proggy, psychedelic and heavy spirit.
