Progressive alt-metal trio King’s X went ultra dark and doomy with 1994’s Dogman, the band’s most massive-sounding release. Produced by Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots), it contrasts trudging, broken-spirited grunge-blues (“Shoes”) with bassist dUg Pinnick’s unshakably soulful vocals and a swaggering take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Manic Depression.” The record put them on the road to with Pearl Jam, landed them a spot at Woodstock ’94, and yielded a radio hit with its title track. While they always had that dog in them, there’s something truly remarkable about the overall bite of their Dogman.

With strong approval from both critics and fans, Dogman is often considered as one of their best works to date.
