Iron Maiden entered a devilishly delightful phase of their career with 1982’s The Number of the Beast. The band’s third full-length was the first to feature human air raid siren Bruce Dickinson on vocals, and the Samson graduate brought a quasi-operatic theatricality to his new home. Beast’s world-building lyrics referenced anything from semi-obscure British sci-fi, to settler/indigenous conflict, to the title track’s Satanic Panic-inducing dreamscapes. It marks the moment where Maiden officially transformed from street-savvy, punky upstarts into globe-conquering metal godhead. From “Run to the Hills” to “Hallowed Be Thy Name” and beyond, it’s a wall-to-wall masterpiece.
