While Iron Maiden are larger-than-life metal icons, their first two albums with vocalist Paul Di’Anno were grounded in street-level swagger. By 1981, the band were officially on the prowl as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and their second album is the sound of London toughs stalking Tube stations with switchblades tucked into their leather jackets. Di’Anno could hit the high notes with the best of them, but his violent rasp on “Wrathchild” and the vicious title cut is his legacy — Killers would be his last album with Maiden. While they’d soon record the biggest albums of their career, they would never again sound as raw, punky and threatening as this.
