Back when it was released in 2008, Have Heart vocalist Patrick Flynn described the group’s Songs to Scream at the Sun as a coming-of-age story. Few realized that the melodic straight edge hardcore band were about to close the book on themselves entirely — which, oddly, makes Have Heart’s vital sophomore full-length even more poetic and powerful, in retrospect.
While Flynn’s rough-shouted, early-album takedowns of toxic masculinity ricochet off fast-as-lightning drums and melancholy guitar work, by Songs’ end the future Fiddlehead leader was basking in the promise of better days ahead.
