Back when Bay Area hardcore band Gulch were still playing shows, vocalist Elliot Morrow would literally whip his bandmates with his belt mid-song — indeed, he and the rest of the band wrestled with out-of-control, death-and-oi-tinted heaviness whilst putting their blood, sweat and tears into each extreme performance. That intensity carries over into 2020’s Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress, an eight-song monstrosity of jackhammered blasts — courtesy of drummer and Drain vocalist Sammy Ciaramataro — corroded buzzsaw riffage and pushed-to-the-brink screaming. The psyche-smashing record closes with a dark hardcore remodeling of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Sin in My Heart.” A modern NorCal classic, recently repressed on “Marble” vinyl.
