1997’s Colour and the Shape molded Foo Fighters into a proper band. While 1995’s self-titled debut album was almost entirely performed by project founder and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, he opened up the process on their second album to collaborate with the likes of Germs guitarist Pat Smear and Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Nate Mendel (both actively performing with Grohl to this day). Colour stands as one of their best outings, a vibrant blend of pop-punk energy (“Monkey Wrench”), emo-anthemic devotionals (“Everlong”) and powerfully earnest, mosh-forward alt-rock (“My Hero”). Experience the total package as two shapely 12-inch slabs of wax.
