Even across a catalog of subversively screwball efforts, Fantômas’ fourth experimental metal outing was one of their screwiest. The supergroup continued to cross-mutate liminal music concrete with ever-thrashable guitar riffage and vocalist Mike Patton’s boundaryless expressionism. But then they also crunched and clanked the zany sound effects of the Golden Age of Animation into their arrangements, suggesting what it might feel like if Porky and Daffy started swingin’ mallets around while crowdkilling a death-metal mosh pit. An especially loony set of tunes from this oddball outfit.
