Following the massive success of 1989 breakthrough The Real Thing and crossover MTV hit “Epic,” Faith No More probably could have cranked off another run of funked-up rap-metal tracks and rode their way back to the top of the charts. Instead, they defied expectations with their profoundly complex Angel Dust. Metallic chugs still surged through the mix, but songs like “Be Aggressive” also pitted Jim Martin’s guitar against haunted house organs and innuendo-crazed cheerleader chants. Mike Patton is crooning heavy on fan-favorite mood-rocker “Midlife Crisis,” but the record also rides out with a touching instrumental cover of the Midnight Cowboy theme. No small victory, it’s Faith No More’s defining artistic statement.
