Drain’s debut album marked a major turning point for Northern California hardcore culture in the early 2020s, as the band were making waves alongside contemporaries like Gulch and Scowl. Though the Santa Cruz quartet would fully embrace a fun-loving, party-starting vibe on subsequent releases, California Cursed remains a no-holds-barred and tension-driven beatdown of metallic hardcore aggression, Sepultura-channeling thrash riffs, Black Flag and Rivieras references, and some of the sickest bleghs ever laid to tape.
