Released in 1989 through Sire, Green Mind was Dinosaur Jr.’s first album for a major label, preceding alt-rock’s post-Nevermind boom by a couple of years. Founding bassist and future Sebadoh member Lou Barlow had left the band the year before, while longtime drummer Murph ceded much of Green Mind’s beatmaking to bandleader, vocalist and guitar hero J. Mascis. Featuring classic tracks like “The Wagon”, their fourth full-length still hammers in what fans had already loved about Dinosaur Jr.: infectious hooks, plus Mascis’ patented melding of wide-awake-blasted guitar soloing and endearingly drawly vocals.
