Simply put, deathcore as a genre wouldn’t exist without The Healing Process. Despised Icon’s 2002 debut synthesized the hard-nosed spirit of Hatebreed with the breakdown addiction of Poison the Well, and played those chugs with the decimating force of a Nineties death-metal group like Suffocation. It was a winning formula that other bands wouldn’t start collecting on for another five years, which makes The Healing Process an essential text in extreme metal history — and one that still goes hard all these years later.
