Deafheaven’s much-anticipated follow-up to black-gaze breakthrough Sunbather ebbs-and-flows through a series of complex and compelling weather patterns. Stormy cuts like “Baby Blue” dart from shriek-laden salvos and black-metal blasts, towards Nineties emo sensitivity, towards NWOBHM-styled guitarmonies. While they play it heavy with the galloping “Luna,” softer semi-acoustic experiments like “Gifts for the Earth” warm the soul as if it were — as vocalist George Clarke howls — “cocooned by the heat of the ocean floor.” Ten years after its initial release, New Bermuda remains a heavy trip.
