After giving metal fans a NWOBHM-inspired case of whiplash on 1983 debut Kill ‘Em All, Metallica grew into absolute thrash titans with the following year’s Ride the Lightning. The band’s sophomore LP remains a jolting thrill-ride, increasing the speed and aggression when necessary (“Fight Fire with Fire”) while also leaning into dangerously bass-forward stomp-outs (“For Whom the Bell Tolls”) and forever banging anthems (“Fade to Black”). It’s the album where Metallica truly becomes ‘Tallica, and stands not just as a pivotal moment for the band but for thrash as a whole.
