Butthole Surfers exited the eighties with the outstandingly weird Hairway to Steven, an acid-fried head trip through experimental sludge, classic rock malapropisms, nature sounds and more. While longform opener “Jimi” initially bleeds into psych-punk menace and taped manipulated vocal burblings from Gibby Hayes, it ultimately mellows into a mix of bird calls, bowling alley sounds and morning sunshine acoustic guitar. Their Hairway also tangles up toxic dayglow jam-punk, Bonanza-galloping subversion, psychobilly salutes to Julio Iglesias and more. Remastered in 2024, and repressed on classic black wax, it’s one of the strangest yet most satisfying albums in the Texas outfit’s ideas-crazed catalogue.
