Replacing a frontman as beloved as Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne was surely a daunting challenge, but if any singer could pull it off with the right kind of horns-raising gusto, it was Ronnie James Dio. Heaven and Hell was a vital pivot for the band, with metal’s favorite Elf masterfully soaring high above the adrenalized chugging of “Neon Knights” and the stadium-rallying title track with his impeccable vibrato. The Eighties were ultimately a strange and uncertain time for Sabbath, but they kicked off the decade with one of their all-time classics.
