Sound of White Noise is still an incredibly contentious album among Anthrax fans. Their first with ex-vocalist John Bush marked a striking stylistic leap from thrashy gallops to mid-tempo stomps, following the lead of Metallica’s “Black Album” but injecting even more grunge swagger thanks to Bush’s drawly wail on tracks like the hard-rockin’ “Only” — which James Hetfield once called a “perfect song.” It’s an undeniable gem, but there are plenty of other high points throughout this tracklist. Drop the needle and play it loud.
