Longtime Philip Anselmo collaborator Derek Engemann (Scour, the Illegals) is taking himself in a new direction through a guitars-blazing EDM-metal project called ECHO CVLT, which, on its debut single, pairs the guitarist with Icelandic actor-turned-singer Ragga Ragnars (Vikings). Today (May 28th), the duo have teamed with Revolver to premiere the song, “Diamond Hands,” and its music video.
The track had been teased as far back as January, with ECHO CVLT having previously posted a short clip of themselves thrusting into the Flying V-chunking, digitally-pounding song in front of Icelandic waterfalls.
Now, the song has been revealed in full, with Engemann lining up his metallic guitar tone beside a series of squelching EDM touches. After Ragnars drops a few lines about being mystified by the moon, the song ratchets up the tempo for the club-bangers out there.
“This tune pulled me in a new direction creatively,” Engemann tells Revolver. “‘Diamond Hands’ mixes chaos, melody and hard-hitting dance-floor energy in all the right ways. Crank those speakers and hold on for dear life!”
It’s explained that Ragnars and Engemann met by chance during a biohacking conference in Beverly Hills, California. Engemann was familiar with the Vikings actor, and asked her about collaborating after hearing Ragnars’ “Broken Wings” duet with Irish actor/musician Kieran O’Riley.
“Music wasn’t something I originally planned on doing, but this project felt like the perfect kind of challenge,” Ragnars says. “Jumping into ‘Diamond Hands’ pushed me way outside my comfort zone in the best way possible. It has been so fun, a little chaotic and full of energy. It reminded me that some of the best things happen when you just say yes and go for it.”
