TOOL played a surprise, two-song set last night (January 23rd) at the Bass Magazine Awards in Santa Ana, California, where god-tier bassist Justin Chancellor received a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award for “his bass wizardry and alchemy in TOOL,” as the band put it themselves.
The performance took place at Santa Ana’s The Observatory venue, and the rare up-close-and-intimate club gig had TOOL first taking on their Lateralus classic “Schism” — which, according to a poll of Revolver readers, features the greatest metal bass line of all time — before driving the point home with a run-through of 10,000 Days’ “Jambi.”
While celebrating Chancellor’s bass playing doesn’t seem that out of the norm, getting the chance to see TOOL playing in a smaller room like the 1,200-capacity Observatory made the night even more incredible. Last night, the Bass Magazine Awards also celebrated players including Thundercat, John Patitucci and MonoNeon, the last having staged a performance alongside Primus’ Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and more.
While TOOL don’t have any more club dates on the books this year — at least not yet — the band are staging their Live in the Sand destination festival in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, between March 7-9th. They’ll be headlining, while other acts set to play include Mastodon, Primus, Coheed and Cambria, Eagles of Death Metal, King’s X, Fishbone and more.
