TOOL took their iconically inky brand of alt-metal down to New Zealand over the weekend, and peppered a pair of concert performances with a mix of mandatory classics and a handful of deep cuts that hadn’t been played on-stage in decades.
A two-night stand took place at Auckland, New Zealand’s Spark Arena on Saturday (November 22nd) and Sunday (November 23rd), with each night finding the act hitting crucial, complex setlist favorites like 10,000 Days’ “Jambi” and “Rosetta Stoned,” Lateralus’ “The Grudge” and more recent cuts off Fear Inoculum. TOOL mixed these around in the setlist order between the two nights. The two concerts’ encores also both featured a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Hand of Doom.”
Fans were likewise treated to a number of staggering surprises, including the reappearance of Aenima’s heady “H.” for both nights. The Saturday night show also brought 10,000 Days’ “Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)” to the stage for the first time since 2009, while additionally delivering Lateralus’ “Disposition” for its first performance since 2002, and dug all the way back to debut album Undertow for “Crawl Away,” which they hadn’t hit since 1998.
The Sunday night show had the act unlocking Undertow single “Prison Sex” for the first time in 23 years, while 10,000 Days’ “Intention” has returned following an 11-year absence from TOOL’s setlist.
