This past Saturday (August 17th), System of a Down rocked San Francisco, playing a co-headline show with Deftones that was billed as “a standalone event at the historic Golden Gate Park.” Performed to a sold-out crowd of 50,000 fans, the Bay Area concert was indeed a show for the ages.
The outdoor show started with an opening set from death-pop duo VOWWS, and likewise included performances from Swedish smarm-punks Viagra Boys and reunited psych-prog absurdists the Mars Volta. Deftones then surged into a 15-song set — though in the absence of founding guitarist Stephen Carpenter — before System took the stage.
S.O.A.D.’s 25-song mega-set was the band’s second live performance of 2024 thus far, following their appearance at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Sick New World festival in the spring. The quartet started things off fresh with their 2020 single “Genocidal Humanoidz,” but also dug deep into the archive, pulling out anything from their 1998 self-titled debut’s manic “Suite-Pee,” to monster hits including “B.Y.O.B.,” “Sugar,” “Hypnotize,” “Chop Suey!” and “Aerials.”
Throughout the night, System likewise brought a few songs back into the fold, including the self-titled album’s “Know” and “P.L.U.C.K.,” both of which having last been performed in concert back in 2018. They also hammered into Steal This Album!’s “Mr. Jack” for the first time since 2019.
