Spirit Adrift surprise-released a new album today (April 10th) called Infinite Illumination, and with it band founder Nate Garrett has likewise announced that he’s putting his long-running gloom-metal band to rest.
The album follows the recently-delivered “Eternal Celestial Energy” single, which Garrett had told Revolver last month was the “heaviest thing I’ve ever written, both sonically and emotionally” — that song does not feature on the new LP.
Rather, the 8-song Infinite Illumination is described in a press release as collection that presents “a palpable sense of malaise both spiritual and terrestrial, personal and universal, inflicted via crushing traditional Doom riffs, thunderous mid-tempo marches and Garrett’s impassioned vocal delivery.”
You can stream the album in full up above, while 20 Buck Spin are taking pre-orders for physical copies of Infinite Illumination on LP and CD over here.
Formed in Arizona in 2015 by onetime Gatecreeper rhythm guitarist Garrett, Spirit Adrift explored elements of doom, gloom and trad-metal across sixth full-length LPs, a handful of EPs, their Hot & Heavy: Live In Tejas concert collection and more.
The band undertook numerous tours around North American and Europe, last performing March 20th at the Paper Tiger in San Antonion, Texas, on a bill with Crowbar, Eyehategod and Black Magnet. Per setlist.fm, Spirit Adrift had given the new record’s crushing “Window Within” and “Buried in the Shadow” of the Cross their live debuts that night.
It’s unclear at present whether Spirit Adrift will perform any more shows to further hail their swansong LP.
