Coming off of Slipknot’s self-titled-centric “Here Comes the Pain” tour, the Iowa Nine have now unveiled plans to reissue their iconic debut LP in celebration of its 25th anniversary. While the deluxe re-release will obviously include the original album, the expanded Slipknot will also feature rarities like the newly unveiled demo for “Prosthetics.”
Slipknot (25th Anniversary Edition) is due to arrive in September as a comprehensive six-album box set. (A “blood-filled vinyl” version of the box set, limited to 100, sold out almost immediately yesterday after it appeared on the band’s store.) This comprises the original 15-song collection as produced by “Godfather of Nu-Metal” Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit), but also the rawer set of demos Slipknot recorded before they linked up with the producer at Malibu, California’s Indigo Ranch studio.
As you can hear up above, the primordial “Prosthetics” runs a touch sludgier in the intro, and isn’t quite as industrial drum-pingy as what ultimately made the LP. You can pick out a few other choice differences between the LP and demo versions via the player.
“We loved what we did with the first record but we didn’t even know if there was gonna be anything after that,” guitarist Jim Root recalled of the broader self-titled experience in a statement. “We just wanted people to hear it. Selling out of records and shows, having successful tours — those are goals for any band. But the dream scenario in some ways, came true for us.”
The upcoming deluxe SK25 boxset features the original album on the first slab of wax, and then it showcases 59 recordings that encompass Indigo Ranch demos, alternate mixes and rarities, live versions pulled from 1999- and 2000-era ‘Knot sets in Hartford, Connecticut and around the UK, and more.
