Sleep Token added a boss new tune to their North American tour setlist last night (September 24th), with Vessel having saluted Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” through a low-key piano rendition at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The impromptu cover took place a few songs into Sleep Token’s headlining set at the arena. Vessel sparked things off with lithe piano fingerwork before adapting his vibrato vocal style around Springsteen’s lines on malaise, anxiety, stagnation, inspiration and artistry.
Considering the similar songcraft-and-stardom-centered crises Vessel explores on songs like Even in Arcadia’s “Caramel” and “Damocles,” both of which also performed in Philadelphia, the choice of cover seems fitting. Likewise, you could argue the Boss’ iconic “I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face” line kind of connects to the updated costuming of the Even in Aracadia era.
