We are truly living through a hardcore renaissance of the late-night television landscape. The latest group to broadcast themselves onto mainstream airwaves is Santa Cruz, California’s Scowl, who made their television debut last night (April 9th) on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert performing their Are We All Angels single “Tonight (I’m Afraid).”
Less than a week on from the release of their latest full-length, Scowl rocketed through the performance for Colbert’s studio audience, flexing their mix of melodious pop-core hooks, vintage alt-rock vibes and an array of screamed-and-sung moments from vocalist Kat Moss.
“Tonight (I’m Afraid)” was originally released in March along with a flipbook animation-style music video put together by Adult Swim’s Adam Fuchs. It found cartoony avatars of Scowl boppin around to their song — at least until a shadowy beast starts decapitating the hardcore crew. Fortunately, there were no beheading last night, though the hardcore crew did deliver a characteristically ferocious performance.

As previously announced, Are We All Angels recently arrived through their new label home, Dead Oceans Records. Scowl will be playing a record release show at New York, New York’s Nightclub 101 tomorrow (April 11th), and likewise have a headline tour of Europe and the UK on deck for May and then a U.S. tour in July.
