While we’re still a month out from the release of Sanguisugabogg’s no-doubt gnarly next LP, Hideous Aftermath, it’s also lookin’ like 1994 again — as the Ohio-made death-metallers have unveiled another video arguably pulling inspiration from an MTV classic. This time around, their “Repulsive Demise” seemingly takes on the sepia-toned aesthetics of Nine Inch Nails’ iconic “Closer” video.
As previously reported, Sanguisugabogg had previously glazed the look and feel of Soundgarden’s old “Black Hole Sun” video onto their “Abhorrent Contraception” — albeit while mixing the former’s dutch tilts and saturated tones with a family horror gorefest. This time around, the “Repulsive Demise” vid borrows the muted beige-and-brown-tinted ickiness of the Mark Romanek-directed “Closer” video.
While an NSFW tag is affixed on this due to a few scenes featuring a topless woman holding an animal skull, Bogg vocalist Devin Swank isn’t leaning into the ball-gagging S&M-isms of Reznor’s “Closer” performance — instead choosing to either grip a mic for some death growls, or spend his time staring incredulous at a tarantula.
That said, bonus points go to director Errick Easterday and art director Ashton Clemons for adding the creepy crawling, Downward Spiraling millipede to the cast.
The song itself mixes subsonic riff crunching with a more leanly industrialized drum rhythm than we’re used to from Sanguisugabogg, while Swank grunts of societal decay.
“We always like to do something a little different on our albums and this happens to be one of our most different songs yet,” the band explained in a joint statement. “As much as it’s weird, we think it’s pummeling and groovy. We you all dig what we consider the theme song of our album ‘Repulsive Demise’.”
As previously reported, Hideous Aftermath was recorded with Kurt Ballou at his God City Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. The album features guest appearances from members of Nails, Peeling Flesh, Full of Hell and Cattle Decapitation. Swank has called the release Sanguisugabogg’s “most focused and brutal record to date.”
