Here’s a spicy way to start your day: Swedish metal force Orbit Culture have a brand new single called “Hydra,” and you can check out their latest heavy-chunking assault in a Dune-inspired music video.
The song is the third preview from Orbit Culture’s heavily anticipated Death Above Life album, following the record’s title track and “The Tales of War,” and this time the band march through a commanding, open-chugged rhythm.
Through screams and a tuneful growl, guitarist-vocalist Niklas Karlsson plays out the death of a friendship through allusions of two-headed snakes — hydras, if you will — slithering ‘round with duplicitous intent (“They’re smelling brand new flesh / pierce their fangs in you”). It’s also apparently about greed, gambling and lots of cocaine.
“Lyrically, it’s a raw and unfiltered track about cutting ties — direct, honest, and uncompromising,” the group wrote in a joint statement. “The song was written during a period of intense stress and frustration and channeling that emotion onto paper felt like a necessary release.
As for the video, it finds Orbit Culture crushing the cut across the California desert plains, and causing massive fissures in the landscape with their bombastic musical approach. Also featuring fire and an imposing, skeletal side-character, the general flow of the epic, sand-stirring scene was inspired by “the vast, cinematic atmosphere of the Dune films,”.
They added: “We scouted the California desert to find the perfect location — no green screens, no tricks. What you see is real: just four Swedish guys sweating it out in the scorching desert heat.”
